Industry Status and Trends

The Japanese pharmaceutical market ranks second in terms of size following the US and, together with Australia, is one of the two most mature markets within the Asia Pacific region. After regulatory changes in 2007 Japanese and global pharmaceutical companies became more flexible in the acceptance of foreign data regarding ethnic similarity.

Need for Clinical Trial Talent Development

There is a high demand for bilingual medical doctors, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. Many employers will interview available candidates whether or not they have a current vacancy.

Japanese nationals returning from either work or graduate school experience abroad are also in high demand for both their language skills and understanding of Japanese and western cultures. Both foreign and domestic employers are keen to recruit these individuals.

To address the need for clinical research professionals in Japan, PAREXEL Academy has established a partnership with Kyoto Pharmaceutical University. In August, 2013, 20 undergraduate students graduated from the Site Management pilot program, which introduced them to different aspects of clinical research, with a focus on the practical work of a Clinical Research Associate (CRA).
